IFA2015: Samsung Releases First 4K Blu-ray Disc Player
Samsung announced its first UHD Blu-ray player at this year's IFA. The new 4K era has officially arrived.
In May of this year, the Ultra-clear Blu-ray standard specification was announced. The new standard format uses a 3840×2160 resolution (4K@60fps) and will also feature two new features developed specifically for TVs, Wide Color Gamut (WCG) and High Dynamic Range (HDR).
On August 24th, the specification entered the start of licensing, and Samsung (including Sony and Panasonic) players were able to start meeting consumers, but the price and time to market were temporarily not announced.
Ultra Blu-ray discs will be coded using the relatively new HEVC (ie H.265) standard. In addition, in terms of sound effects, Ultra Blu-ray supports DTX:X and Dolby Atmos, and the discs will have 50GB, 60GB, and 100GB capacities.
In theory, all 4K TVs can support ultra-clear blue, including the old models that output HDMI 1.4, but support on HDR and WCG may not be perfect.
To this end, Samsung said that the new UHD TV will be launched as soon as possible, and the world will first support the HDMI 2.0a interface, so that looking at Blu-ray will be even better.
Compared with streaming services already provided on online services, the advantage of Blu-ray is the extremely high bit rate (up to 108 Mbps), compared with 16 Mbps for U.S. Netflix 4K ultra clear streaming.
