Touch is an essential yet challenging aspect of virtual reality. Even if you push the resolution of VR headsets to their limits or smooth out the frame rates for optimal comfort, the illusion of presence can crumble the moment users reach out expecting to feel something tangible but encounter only air.
Recently, at the TechCrunch Sessions: Robotics event, a team from MIT showcased a portable device they call the "Shape Display," which functions as a dynamic surface that moves alongside your hand to mimic interactions within a virtual or augmented reality environment. They’ve named the system "ReVeal."
This concept might remind you of another project from the MIT Media Lab known as TRANSFORM. Both systems employ arrays of actuated pins to recreate physical sensations, but while TRANSFORM is a stationary setup meant to stay in one place, ReVeal is designed to follow the user's movements in real-time, allowing for more expansive simulations across larger spaces. Imagine feeling like you’re interacting with objects that span the width of a room—something previously impossible without being tethered to a fixed display.
However, like any haptic technology, ReVeal isn’t without its drawbacks. The tactile feedback it provides has a limit when it comes to granularity. Increasing the resolution—essentially making the pins smaller and denser—is technically feasible but comes with significant challenges. Smaller pins mean higher precision requirements, which could drive up both cost and complexity.
When I spoke with Daniel Fitzgerald, the lead developer behind this innovation, he emphasized that ReVeal remains very much a proof-of-concept at this stage. There are no immediate plans for commercialization or public deployment. Still, the potential applications are vast—from gaming to therapeutic rehabilitation—and it’s exciting to think about where this kind of tech might go in the future.
For now, though, it seems we’ll have to wait a bit longer before these advancements hit mainstream markets. But who knows? Maybe someday soon, reaching into thin air won’t feel so empty after all.
