More and more listed screen companies are extending their business to advertising media, sports culture and other fields; some small and medium-sized enterprises are struggling to survive on the line of life and death.

Lianjian Optoelectronics seeks diversification

Taking Lianjian Optoelectronics as an example, the proportion of LED application products in revenue declined year after year. From 2013 to 2015, the proportion of LED application product sales accounted for 96.99%, 64.60% and 51.30% respectively.

From another perspective, sales of Lianguang Optoelectronics LED applications have continued to grow. From 2013 to 2015, LED application revenues were 580 million yuan, 627 million yuan and 718 million yuan respectively.

At the beginning of the A-share market, Lianjian Optoelectronics apparently wanted to do something in the field of LED screens. In the prospectus, Lianjian Optoelectronics said that the goal is to achieve the top three global LED color display application industry in the next three years, and to obtain market leading position in some segments of LED lighting applications.

One fact that cannot be ignored is that outreach mergers and acquisitions bring significant benefits to Lianjian Optoelectronics. At the end of April 2014, Lianjian Optoelectronics completed the acquisition of time-sharing media, and the main business was transformed into “manufacturing + advertising media industry”. Under the influence of the consolidated statements, Lianjian Optoelectronics' revenue for the year was 970 million yuan, an increase of 65.53% over the previous year. This is the fastest year for Lianjian Optoelectronics' revenue growth from 2009 to 2015.

"Now the profit of a single screen is very thin. Many screen companies pack some good advertising spots in a good golden section and do their own screens to realize advertising revenue. “It’s hard to survive simply by doing the screen”

In the LED screen enterprise, the transformation has already become the norm. Listed companies still have economies of scale. They can acquire new profit points by investing in mergers and acquisitions and extending the industrial chain. One of the characteristics of the LED industry is that there are too many SMEs and insufficient industry concentration. In recent years, M&A in the industry, Integration and closure have become more frequent.

"There are too many companies doing screens now, and the competition is too fierce. For enterprises, it is very difficult to survive by simply relying on screens," said Guo Xiu. This is because if the enterprise is simply assembled and screened, all materials must be outsourced, and the pricing power of the material is lost. There is no competitive advantage at all.

Guo Xiu revealed that there are about 1,300 enterprises in the entire LED display industry chain. There are probably less than 500 companies that actually assemble and produce LED screens. These enterprises vary in size, and only real-sized enterprises account for about 10%. There will be room for integration and consolidation in the future, and there will be no more than 100 companies remaining after three to five years."
