California licenses for driverless cars
On the morning of May 23, Beijing time, the California Motor Vehicle Administration will issue licenses to specific driverless cars and their co-pilot drivers from September this year. This will legally resolve the controversy over whether a driverless car can travel on public roads.
According to the plan, these licenses cost only $150 each and can be used by up to 10 driverless cars and 20 test drivers. However, the requirements for applying for this license are very strict, some of which are as follows:
- Only designated employees of specific driverless car manufacturers can apply.
- Driverless cars require at least $5 million in insurance to cover injuries, deaths and property damage.
- In all cases, the test driver needs to be able to take over the driverless car immediately.
Google driverless car
- The test driver must have obtained a driver's license for 3 years and there has been no accident that caused a person's injury. Those who have been revoked their driving license for drunk driving in the past 10 years are also not allowed to apply.
- Any accidents that occur during driving of a driverless vehicle, resulting in property damage or casualties, must be reported to the California Motor Vehicle Authority within 10 days.
The California Motor Vehicle Authority will begin accepting applications in July this year, and the first license will be issued until September.
