Infrared technology solves the problem of audio wireless transmission

Hi-fi, consumer electronics, audio systems, home theaters, but this method breeds a lot of problems, such as limiting mobility, and then messy cables spread throughout the room (such as home or office), not only inconvenient And it affects the environment. To succeed in today's highly competitive marketplace, modern short-range communication devices require wireless means to easily and quickly connect to various resources.

One solution for short-range wireless connectivity is to transmit/receive different types of signals using radio frequency (RF) bands that are specifically allocated by government agencies. For example, RF solutions for certain consumer electronics applications, such as PC networking, are very popular and reliable wireless data connections. However, on the other hand, RF-based communication solutions for real-time, streaming, home entertainment applications such as audio and video are vulnerable to interference from other wireless RF systems such as WLAN (802.11), Bluetooth, and cordless phones. . All of these RF-based applications use the free but crowded 2.4GHz or 5/5.8GHz ISM RF band, which is susceptible to co-channel interference.

In addition, the home entertainment industry has created barriers to RF-based devices. In this area, the connection must maintain ultra-low latency to ensure 'lip sync' between the video image produced by the AV source and the wirelessly connected audio reproduction device (ie, the speaker). In fact, RF is well suited for wireless data links, allowing data to be retransmitted in the presence of interference, but it is much more difficult to achieve reliable transmission of uncompressed hi-fi audio streams. In addition, RF for mobile phones, Bluetooth headsets, etc. is also suspected to cause harm to human health if used frequently, and the professional medical literature is now more and more frequently discussed.

The use of infrared (IR) light as a wireless communication medium is also very popular. We often see IR ports on mobile phones, PDAs, and other consumer (CE) devices. It is reported that the current base of devices with IR ports has reached nearly 1 billion. At the same time, infrared remote control is the communication standard for indoor wireless control. Despite this, traditional IR solutions require line-of-sight and directionality between the transmitter and the receiver, which greatly limits their application and market appeal. The IR port's data transfer rate can be quite high, but the range is very short, only 10cm-100cm for IrDA devices; or the distance can be longer, but the data transfer rate is very low (such as remote control applications).

To overcome these problems with existing IR solutions while avoiding RF communication problems, Infra-Com has developed products based on diffuse infrared (DIR) technology. DIR utilizes the ability of infrared light signals to bounce back to avoid the line-of-sight and directional requirements of traditional IR solutions. With DIR, the information generated by the transmitter that loads the infrared signal is "bounced" throughout the enclosed space (such as a room, office, laboratory) and then collected by a specially designed, highly sensitive receiver. DIR technology expands the range of applications of infrared products, thereby broadening the range of applications.

1. Unique ASIC chipset

Infra-Com has created the first truly low-cost technology platform for short-range, all-round wireless optical communications. Infra-Com designed a unique ASIC group (ie chipset) based on the DIR scheme. IrGate relies on IR's reflection and scattering from ceilings, walls and other surfaces to establish high-bit wireless communication (see Figure 1).

Figure 1: The omni-directional form of IrGate works in an enclosed space

The IrGate transmitter uses an IR LED array for three-dimensional wide-area emission in an enclosed space, and the IrGate receiver uses a highly sensitive receiver array to detect the residual infrared energy emitted and reproduce the original signal, even in the light path. Has been heavily absorbed and attenuated.

Infra-Com sells IrGate technology in the form of a small ASIC chipset, which is the first in its class. The benefits of this highly flexible solution have been tested and validated by mainstream vendors in the consumer electronics industry, which has also introduced the first samples embedded in IrGate.

The inherent advantages of IrGate include:

1. Low cost—Infrared solutions like the baseband type of IrGate can reduce the cost of the manufacturing process. Infra-Com is setting the path for further miniaturization, which will result in a significant reduction in the cost per link.

2. Reliable high bandwidth - IrGate now has a raw bit rate of 22.5 Mbps (further development up to 50 Mbps); it can operate under different ambient lighting conditions (ie natural and artificial light sources) and provides an inherent division, ie The IrGate-based communication/network enables adjacent space to be free from co-channel interference caused by "bandwidth multiplexing."

3. Avoid RF technology issues—IrGate and RF devices do not interfere with each other; it avoids RF signal delays in audio/video streaming applications; IR signals cannot pass through walls and work only in closed spaces, ensuring privacy And security.

4. No frequency allocation or regulatory issues – IrGate is a global, non-regulatory technology. It does not require government frequency allocation or any specific classification; the "green" IR signal cannot penetrate human tissue and does not harm the human body.

5. Can be modified for consumer electronics applications - IrGate is implemented in a small chipset that can be embedded in many different types of consumer electronics; providing 'plug and play' for ODM/OEM with a very concise reference design 'System implementation; its digital ASIC (ie, the interface with the "outside") uses industry-standard interfaces (such as I2S), directly connected to existing equipment, so it can retain the most commonly used system architecture.
