Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE:6723), a global leader in semiconductor solutions, has unveiled the industry’s first integrated flash microcontroller (MCU) built on a 28nm process. The new RH850/E2x series is now available for sampling and represents a major leap forward in automotive technology. Designed to power next-generation eco-friendly and autonomous vehicles, this groundbreaking MCU features up to six 400MHz processor cores, delivering an impressive 9600 MIPS of processing power—making it the first car control MCU with such high performance.
The RH850/E2x series includes up to 16MB of embedded flash memory, enhanced security, and improved functional safety, making it ideal for complex vehicle control systems. Renesas’ Autonomy™ platform supports intelligent driving and autonomous development, offering end-to-end solutions for the future of mobility, including electric, connected, and self-driving vehicles.
With its advanced architecture, the 28nm MCU is designed for cloud connectivity and context-aware applications. It combines cutting-edge technology required for next-gen automotive systems and serves as a core component of the Renesas R-Car Series SoC. Major automotive suppliers like Denso have already adopted the 28nm MCU, recognizing its potential to support energy-efficient engine development and scalable ECU integration.
Key features of the RH850/E2x series include:
- **Superior Processing Power**: With six 400MHz cores and 9600 MIPS, the MCU offers three times the performance of previous 40nm MCUs while maintaining the same power level. This makes it ideal for advanced fuel system designs and efficient electric/hybrid vehicle control.
- **Large Flash Memory**: The 16MB flash ROM supports advanced OTA updates, enabling secure and efficient firmware upgrades over wireless networks. Enhanced serial communication interfaces provide support for multiple CANFD channels and Ethernet, ensuring seamless connectivity.
- **Enhanced Functional Safety**: The dual-core lock-step architecture meets the highest ASIL-D standards, ensuring reliable operation in critical applications. Hardware improvements and security tools from Renesas help implement robust safety systems across various use cases.
Since introducing 28nm embedded flash technology in 2015, Renesas has continued to push the boundaries of automotive semiconductors. Collaborating with TSMC, the company launched the world’s first 28nm flash MCU, marking another milestone in its journey to lead the automotive tech revolution.
To ensure scalability, Renesas also announced two 40nm MCUs that share key features of the RH850/E2x series. Both 28nm and 40nm versions of the MCU will be available for sampling in March 2018, providing flexibility for different application needs.
As the demand for smarter, safer, and more sustainable vehicles grows, Renesas remains at the forefront, driving innovation and shaping the future of mobility.
