Brush DC Motor Overview

The brush DC motor uses a brush for commutation. The armature or rotor has a winding that can be terminated to the commutator. The brush provides power to the armature by forming or breaking contacts.

The stator may have two or more permanent magnetisms; the opposite stator magnetic polarity and the excitation windings are attracted to each other, causing the rotor to rotate. When the rotor is aligned with the stator position, the brush will span the commutator and drive the next winding.

Brushed DC motors require maintenance and have a linear torque/current curve. These motors are easy to control and their speed and torque are proportional to current and voltage.

microprocessor

Any MCU series with 4 Pulse Width Modulator (PWM) signals can be used to drive an H-bridge DC/DC converter connected to a brush DC motor. Depending on the complexity of the control algorithm, the feedback control may use a Hall sensor or an encoder.

Due to its ultra-low power operation in active mode and sleep mode, TI's MSP430 is ideal for controlling low-end, battery-powered brushed DC motor systems.

The C2000TM and Stellaris® MCUs have QEI inputs and accept encoder inputs. The Hercules® MCU accepts encoder inputs via a flexible HET coprocessor. The C2000 MCU Series is the best choice if high performance and real-time operation are required. The C2000 or Stellaris MCU meets mid-range system requirements. Hercules MCUs are the first choice when the system needs to be certified based on safety standards such as IEC61508 and can support a variety of performance requirements.

isolation

TI digital isolators feature logic input and output buffers that are isolated by TI's silicon dioxide (SiO2) isolation barrier to provide 4kV isolation.

When used with an isolated power supply, these devices block high voltages, isolate ground, and prevent noise currents from entering the local ground and interfering with or damaging sensitive circuitry.

Interface/connection

Traditional analog RS-232/RS-485 interfaces have always been a common choice for motor control applications. Looking ahead, designers will integrate mainstream interfaces such as Ethernet, USB and CAN into their products.

TI is committed to providing solutions for both traditional and emerging industrial interfaces. For example, TI recently introduced the world's first isolated CAN transceiver ISO1050.

Power management

Texas Instruments offers power management IC solutions ranging from standard ICs to high performance plug-ins, transformers, digital power MOSFETs and integrated power modules.
