Blue OLED energy efficiency new record: 50 lumens / watt (Figure)

Franky So

Researchers at the University of Florida's Materials Technology Department have used blue OLED light sources to create a new energy efficiency record for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Since blue is an important part of white light, this breakthrough is expected to solve a major obstacle in the development of OLED lighting, so that this energy efficiency is much higher than that of fluorescent lamps, and the new generation of light sources with illumination quality similar to incandescent lamps is gaining popularity at an early date.

The research project was funded by the US Department of Energy and led by Franky So, assistant professor of materials science at the University of Florida. The project also included Professor Paul Holloway and another Chinese assistant professor Jiangeng Xue. The paper describing the breakthrough has recently been published in the journal Applied Physics News.

Their highest energy efficiency with blue OLEDs is 50 lumens per watt, and the project's ultimate goal is to achieve 100 lumens per watt, making it closer to the needs of lighting applications. The researchers also said that such OLED light sources can be easily deployed, with a variety of different color officials to match the color of the various colors.
