New Digital Video Reference Design (ADI)

Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI) recently introduced a complete IP surveillance and machine vision camera reference design based on the company's Blackfin BF526C processor. This reference design is designed to help engineers quickly develop and customize a "smart camera" design that implements a complete IP video camera including a camera lens and a D1/HD1/CIF resolution image sensor.

"This design includes all the features of an advanced, networked digital camera." Michael Long, product line manager for industrial video and imaging solutions at Analog Devices' general-purpose DSP division, said, "The performance of the Blackfin solution can range from basic monitoring to today's advanced 'smart cameras'. 'Many features of the product.'

The reference design is primarily aimed at developing security surveillance and machine vision applications, including a Blackfin processor running the uClinuxTM operating system. The BF526C provides a converged solution on a unified core architecture that allows video signal processing to be synchronized with RISC MCU processing to handle network interface requirements. Powerful video and audio processing on a single converged processor provides a unified software development environment, faster system commissioning and deployment, and lower overall system cost. The processor provides camera developers with an integrated audio codec (SSM2603 derivative), video streaming and IP protocols, on-chip DRAM memory, 10/100 Ethernet interface, USB and SD storage, and a local RS-232 port.

The reference design unit captures video at 30fps (NTSC) or 25fps (PAL) at CIF, VGA and D1 resolutions. When audio is encoded in the G.279 standard, the fully programmable Blackfin solution is suitable for a variety of video compression standards such as H.264 and MPEG4. The camera supports two-way audio communication from the control center to the camera's location. The pan-tilt-zoom control of the lens is supported by the Pelo-P or Pelo-D protocol.

An optional daughter card for the dual-core BF561 processor is available now, which brings higher video resolution to the system while providing performance margins for performing advanced analysis processing functions such as motion detection/tracking on the video stream.

Availability In the US, the IP camera reference design is provided by DigiLink Software, a leading IP-based digital media software and turnkey solution provider based in Irvine, California. In Asia, Beijing Yiwei Oriental Technology Co., Ltd. is responsible for the distribution and technical support of this reference design. Support in Europe is available through Cynove.
