As smartphone screen resolutions continue to improve and CPU performance becomes more powerful, one thing has remained unchanged for years: battery life. It's no secret that having a phone that lasts an entire day even under heavy usage is a huge convenience.
Many people have developed the habit of charging their phones overnight, plugging them in right before bed and leaving them to charge until morning, so they wake up to a fully charged device.
Although modern smartphones are equipped with advanced overcharge protection systems to prevent damage, they don’t always manage heat effectively. Charging your phone under a pillow or on your bed while you sleep can lead to overheating, which is harmful to the battery over time.
Phonearena recently shared an insightful article discussing how battery charge levels, temperature, and overall lifespan are closely related. This is especially important for users who are unaware of how their charging habits can affect their device’s longevity.
According to data from BatteryUniversity, a battery that is frequently charged to 100% at high temperatures (like 40°C) will degrade much faster. For instance, a battery charged to 40% at 40°C can retain about 85% of its original capacity after a year. In contrast, if it’s charged to 100% at the same temperature, it may only retain 65% of its capacity after just one year.
In short, the higher the charge level and the higher the temperature during charging, the more quickly the battery will lose its efficiency. That’s why it’s better to avoid keeping your phone fully charged for long periods, especially when it's hot.
To help preserve your phone’s battery, consider using a partial charge instead of waiting until it’s completely drained. Also, try to keep your phone away from heat sources while charging, such as under your pillow or on a soft surface that traps heat.
