Fujitsu: I am also very good at the ferroelectric memory!

Ferroelectric RAM (FRAM or FeRAM) is a unique type of non-volatile memory that combines the best features of both ROM and RAM. It offers high-speed write operations, low power consumption, excellent endurance, and data retention without power. Over the years, FRAM has seen steady growth in the market, especially in industrial and embedded applications. With the rapid expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT), FRAM is expected to play an even more significant role in smart devices and connected systems. Fujitsu Semiconductor, a Japanese company with over 15 years of experience in FRAM technology, has shipped more than 2.5 billion FRAM units worldwide since its first product launch in 1999. The company started by applying FRAM in smart cards, such as transportation tickets and financial cards, as well as RFID systems in Japan. Over time, it expanded into broader markets, including medical devices, smart meters, and industrial automation. Fujitsu now offers a wide range of FRAM products, from 4Kbit to 4Mbit, supporting both serial interfaces like I2C and SPI, as well as parallel interfaces. Fujitsu’s FRAM product line includes standalone memory chips, RFID/Verification System-on-Chip (SoC) solutions with built-in FRAM, and custom-designed options tailored to specific customer needs. According to Xie Jinghua, a senior product engineer at Fujitsu Semiconductor, all FRAM products are designed, packaged, and tested in-house, ensuring high reliability and consistent supply. The company continues to invest in R&D, and its current FRAM products offer industry-leading performance in terms of endurance—up to 1 million read/write cycles—and fast write speeds. In industrial automation, FRAM's high durability and fast write speed make it ideal for applications where data must be written and stored reliably under harsh conditions. Smart meters are another major application area for Fujitsu’s FRAM. Currently, over 10,000 smart meters on the market use FRAM as their built-in memory. In China, where the smart meter market is growing rapidly, many devices use 64Kbit FRAM modules. Fujitsu can also provide customized system solutions based on different regional regulations and customer requirements. Beyond industrial and smart meter applications, FRAM is also gaining traction in various other fields. Payment terminals, vending machines, ticketing systems, gaming machines, automotive electronics, and medical devices are all potential areas where FRAM can shine. In healthcare, for instance, large diagnostic equipment, valuable medical instruments, and personal health devices like portable insulin pumps, blood glucose monitors, pulse oximeters, and breathing aids all benefit from FRAM’s reliability and energy efficiency. Xie Jinghua emphasized that Fujitsu is actively promoting the advantages of FRAM and working to expand its use across multiple industries. As a next-generation non-volatile memory solution, FRAM is well-positioned to support the evolving demands of modern electronics and smart systems.
