OSRAM showcases white LED car headlights

OSRAM Opto Semiconductors GmbH demonstrated white light-emitting diode (LED) modules for automotive headlights at CEATEC JAPAN 2006. Each white LED module is capable of emitting a beam of 300 lm. The company has also disclosed white LED modules of the same brightness in the past, but the heat sinks installed on the back of the module for heat dissipation are much smaller than in the past. “Because the luminous efficiency is improved, the heat loss is reduced†(on-site commentator). The luminous efficiency is 30 to 40 lm/W.
The white LED is a combination of a yellow fluorescent material and a blue LED chip. There are 6 chips connected in series in the module, and the input current is 350mA. The blue LED chip used is a variety of "ThinGaN" that OSRAM Optoelectronics calls. ThinGaN is capable of transmitting more than 97% of the illuminance from the surface of the chip, which is convenient for light control by the lens.
