TI introduces the latest 12V motor driver series to eliminate motor tuning

Beijing, December 12, 2014. Texas Instruments (TI) today announced the availability of its latest 12V motor driver family to further expand its motor drive portfolio, which not only reduces start-up time to seconds, but also further simplifies stepper motors and brushed DC motors. Tuning. The DRV8846 incorporates the latest patented adaptive current control technology to automatically tune motor performance for an accurate, smooth and quiet working environment. The DRV8848 simplifies design by using a simple pulse width modulation (PWM) control interface with minimal external components.

Both devices feature comprehensive fault protection that simplifies design complexity and increases system reliability for 3D printers, IP security cameras, refrigerator damper control, HVAC, home automation equipment, and robotic vacuum Motor application requirements such as vacuum cleaners.

Key features and benefits of DRV8846 and DRV8848:

• Zero-tuning operation: The adaptive current regulation function provided on the DRV8846 dynamically changes the current regulation scheme based on load conditions without configuration. This simplifies system-level tuning and debugging, helping end-equipment manufacturers accelerate time-to-market;

· Smooth and quiet work: The DRV8846's 1/32 microstepping indexer combined with adaptive current regulation minimizes current ripple for smooth and accurate motion trajectory and lower noise;

· Highly integrated: The DRV8848 operates without a current sense resistor, so the external components required for operation are only power supply decoupling capacitors. Provides resistors and enables on-chip current regulation for higher precision motor operation;

· Comprehensive fault protection: Advanced on-chip protection including overcurrent protection, thermal shutdown, undervoltage lockout, and fault condition feedback diagnostics protects motor drives and motors, reducing design complexity and increasing system reliability .

TI Designs Reference Design

Two fully tested and up-to-date TI Designs reference designs can be used to speed time to market. The 3D printer reference design is a complete three-axis single-extruder system that uses the DRV8846's adaptive current regulation to accurately drive four stepper motors from a single 12V supply. The refrigerator damper and fan motor control design uses the DRV8848 integrated motor driver to achieve airflow and direction control inside the refrigerator through a single-layer printed circuit board (PCB) design.

Tools and support

The DRV8846EVM and DRV8848EVM Evaluation Board (EVM) help customers easily evaluate device features and performance and experience the simplicity of the tuning process. The EVM supports a user-friendly graphical user interface (GUI) through the MSP430TM microcontroller and USB interface.

For further information on brushed DC motor drive stage designs, the BOOST-DRV8848 BoosterPack kit is also available. This design not only includes everything needed to drive a single dual brushed DC motor, but also supports the parallel mode required to achieve higher currents.

Availability and packaging

The DRV8846 is available now in a 24-pin, 4mm & TImes; 4mm QFN package, and is also available in a 16-pin, 5mm x 6.4mm HTSSOP package.
