With emotional AI becoming more refined, personal devices may soon understand users on a deeper level than even their own families.
Gartner, a leading global research and advisory company, predicts that by 2022, personal devices could recognize your emotional state better than your loved ones. AI is already disrupting how we engage with technology, introducing new ways to connect and respond to user needs.

According to Roberta Cozza, Gartner’s research director, "Emotional AI systems and affective computing are enabling everyday objects to detect, analyze, and respond to human emotions, offering more accurate context and personalized experiences." To stay competitive, tech companies must embed AI throughout their products, or risk falling behind.
Currently, the rise of virtual personal assistants (VPAs) and conversational AI is driving this trend. As this second wave of innovation grows, AI will enhance customer experiences across various sectors—such as education, gaming, diagnostics, fitness, and autonomous vehicles.
Cozza added, “We’re seeing models and commercial products that analyze facial expressions, voice tones, and behavior patterns to significantly improve user experience. This isn’t limited to smartphones or smart homes—wearables and connected cars will also adapt based on user sentiment through computer vision, audio, and sensor data.â€
Gartner forecasts that by 2021, 10% of wearable users will adopt healthier lifestyles, potentially extending their life expectancy by an average of six months. Medical wearables, like smart wristbands, have great market potential, as they can detect life-threatening conditions and support early response systems. Additionally, diagnostic tools for mental health and autism are being developed.
Annette Zimmermann, Gartner’s vice president of research, noted, “Even basic wearables have a positive impact on user health. More people are actively making changes to improve their physical condition. There's evidence that 10–20% of smartwatch and fitness tracker users have detected issues like sleep apnea or irregular heartbeats.â€
By 2020, 60% of personal tech vendors will use third-party AI cloud services to enhance their offerings. Cloud-based AI is creating richer user experiences across networked devices. With cost efficiency, easy integration, and scalability, cloud solutions from big tech firms are gaining traction. The popularity of VPAs and natural language processing is pushing device manufacturers toward cloud AI adoption.
Anthony Mullen, Gartner Research Director, said, “High-end vendors are using these services to expand their reach. For example, Netflix integrates with Google Assistant, and Fitbit uses Alexa Skills. In the future, competition will be based on user experience and product intelligence, not just technology.â€
By 2022, security technologies will combine machine learning, biometrics, and user behavior, reducing password usage to less than 10% of digital authentication methods. Passwords are becoming less effective, and even fingerprint recognition has a success rate of around 75%, affected by dirt or sweat.
Lv Junkuan, Gartner research director, stated, “Users need more convenient and accurate authentication methods. New security technologies will offer seamless, frictionless, and self-service experiences. Over the next five years, these systems will identify users, prevent fraud, and detect threats such as malware and malicious bots.â€
