Daimler's self-driving truck fleet is heading from Germany to the Netherlands
Daimler recently put three of its self-driving trucks on the road and arranged their mission from Stuttgart to Rotterdam. Daimler's move demonstrates both its own autonomous driving technology and, in fact, part of the European Truck Platooning Challenge, which helps accelerate the advancement of autonomous driving technology in Europe.
The European Truck Platooning Challenge was introduced in the Netherlands as the EU's rotating presidency. The pilot project aims to accelerate the development of self-driving truck fleets, reduce congestion and accidents caused by driver mishandling, and greatly reduce the number of accidents. Daimler’s action was part of the pilot project. All the trucks from Germany to the Netherlands were connected via WiFi and Daimler’s Connected Highway Pilot system. These trucks are different from ordinary trucks in that ordinary trucks need to maintain a 50-meter distance, and this automatically controlled truck fleet can only be 15 meters away. As a result, the entire truck fleet also needs to occupy 80m of the highway, much shorter than the 150m of the human-controlled truck fleet.
This is mainly due to Daimler's Connected Highway Pilot system. Under the control of the system, the truck was able to know the emergency braking of other vehicles in 0.1 seconds, which is 1.3 seconds faster than the human response to the brake lights. Of course, in order to ensure safety, Daimler’s trip, there are still human motorists in the car responsible for the control of the auxiliary system.
In addition, Daimler specifically mentioned that the truck fleet can also save energy. Because these trucks are so close together, they can take full advantage of the front vehicle path, saving up to 10% and reducing CO2 emissions. This energy-saving does not seem to be much, but if the entire European trucks start using this technology, the energy savings are still very impressive.
