How to play VR games in the living room? How to set up a VR game venue?

VR games have become one of the ways for people to explore the virtual world in depth. Although VR technology is not yet mature and the interaction mode is not as good as it should have been, VR has indeed come to our lives. Unlike the exhibition hall where there are special fixed devices, we may walk around the living room. How to arrange the living room to adapt to VR game control becomes the number one problem. In this small editor teach you how to decorate the living room, kneeling in the world of VR.

In the VR world, electrons and pixel bits are your food. You are gloriously free from the limitations of the flesh and can fully invest in the virtual world. There is no need to return to the physical body. Our bodies need exercise, but the movement itself cannot stop aging. To experience the VR world, you need to bring a VR helmet. You may put your toes on the coffee table and you may get stumbled on by cats.

Yes, VR is the gateway to the virtual world. Before entering, we must first create a space in the real world. It is not easy to actually arrange this space.

Most of the techniques discussed in this article are aimed at high-end VR helmets, mainly the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift, but there are some that can be used on Samsung Gear VR and Google Cardboard helmets.

Oculus Rift Space Requirements

All VR helmets require a certain amount of space. If you use a mobile phone, you can stand still or sit still. Vive and Rift do not work. Both helmets need a space for the tracking device to work.

The Rift is relatively simple in both helmets. It can track players up to 5 feet by 11 feet (1.5 meters by 3.4 meters). Maybe only 5 feet by 5 feet is enough (1.5 meters x 1.5 Meter). When using a helmet, it is basically sitting. If this is the case, the space requirement is less, so long as there is a table.

You'd better get closer to the table because Rift only comes with a sensor. If you are willing to spend more money on the sensor, you can expand the area. No way, the Rift kit only provides a Touch action controller. With only one sensor, you can't fully turn because there is no tracking unit in the back of the Rift.

HTC Vive space requirements

Vive needs more space than Oculus, because you may have to move around while experiencing the simulation scene. Some simulation programs - such as "Fantastic Contraption" and "Budget Cuts" - require players to move their bodies to explore the virtual world. Tilt Brush, a 3D drawing and modeling program, is too boring if it doesn't allow the author to move around his own work.

On the other hand, the player's body may come out of the scene. To be on the safe side, you need to add 4 feet in all directions. Adding up and down is a lot of space: a minimum of 1.5x2 meters, may be greater.

Among all devices, the Vive helmet is the most advanced. When the computer and Vive match, you can use the built-in motion controller to automatically draw the safe use area.

George Kelion, public relations manager of VR developer Ndreams, said: “From our experience, the bigger the free space is, the better. In order not to let users see the surrounding environment, HTC really considers it from a realistic point of view. When the Chinese user is nearing the real-world boundary, it will display a blue grid to prevent you from hitting the monitor or knocking over the desk lamp.” Ndreams and Vive established a business relationship.

To remind you that: Vive only depicts the border of the scene, if your head crosses the floor it can not control.

PlayStation VR space requirements

The detailed setup requirements for the PlayStation VR are still unclear, and it is understandable that the developer toolkit is still rare after all. One thing is obvious, the PlayStation VR can be used with the PlayStation Eyer camera and Move controller, which connects to the PlayStation 4 instead of the PC.

That said, if you are considering buying a PlayStation VR (although its hardware is much weaker), your living room may already have a PlayStation 4 installed, and you don't want to make too many adjustments. In addition, PS4 and built-in processor can input streaming data for TV and helmet at the same time, so you may not want to remove the sofa.

From the PS4 demo video, we estimate that PlayStation VR will not need more space than Oculus and existing PlayStation cameras. There was a slide show when the PlayStation VR was released. The maximum space supported by the helmet is 5.7 ft x 7.2 ft (2 mx 3 m).

Choose a room

The first thing to notice when choosing a room is height. Some games require a lot of physical exertion, such as tennis games. From time to time, you can use high-level controllers to quickly swipe. If the ceiling is too low, you may crash the controller. You definitely do not want this.

If you want to use a standing table, it's best to place the table on a sturdy floor and wear sports shoes when you play. If you often use a helmet, you should do so. It is recommended not to stick the carpet and it is best to be able to move. If you are planning to use a helmet in a full carpet room, think twice!

All systems support viewer mode. Images can be displayed on a PC monitor or on a television. It is advisable to plan their placement in advance when planning a room.

Clean room to ensure safety

This is obviously obvious. When choosing a room, you must carefully clean up the game area. If there is anything that should not exist in the space, the system will not remind you to clear everything as much as possible. Do not leave pets and children in the room.

If you have a child running around, consider it more when choosing a room: Please ensure your child's safety. When using a helmet, you are basically a blind man. Many times your attention is not concentrated.

Wrap the corners of the table with bubbles and you don’t need much money. All cables must be aware that it may trip you, especially the lines to the head.

If the room has a chair, a swivel chair is recommended, preferably without wheels. Many applications of Rift do not require the user to move, so that you really do not need to move in the entire space.

Install PC

If you choose PlayStation VR, you may have installed a PS4 in the living room and game room. You can skip this step. We will not discuss the details of creating a quasi-VR PC for the time being. Here, we only talk about where the PC should be placed.

Obviously, the PC should be placed close to where you use the helmet. In the case of Vive, it should not be more than 5 meters away from the base station because the line is only 5 meters long. You also need to consider whether to connect a monitor.

Install base station for Vive

Different systems, tracking unit requirements are also different. Oculus's tracking unit is a bit poorer. It can be placed on a monitor or television. Playstation Camera has its own installation guide. The Vive camera requires more.

Two Vive tracking base stations need to be installed at a specific altitude, but also to remain stable. It is best to nail them to walls or ceilings. Also consider using strong adhesives or removable tripods (screws can be embedded in the wall).

Every tracking base station needs to supply power, your host needs to supply power, and it is absolutely impossible to prepare more wires.

Obstruct the reflective surface when installing Vive

To avoid problems when using Vive, you'd better cover up reflective surfaces such as mirrors and glass tables.

If you watch Vive's demo video, you will find that Valva has everything covered, blue tape is not let off, metal door handles, plastic lamp switches, photo frames are all covered. why? Because the development helmet has Lighthouse sensors installed, reflections may confuse the laser.

It has been reported that the latest version of the Vive helmet mounted Lighthouse sensor does not have this problem. If it is really troublesome, the first thing that comes to mind is reflection.
