Electromagnetic flowmeters are composed of two main components: an electromagnetic flow sensor and a flow converter. The sensor typically includes measuring tubes, electrodes, excitation coils, cores, yokes, and housing. The measuring tube is made of a non-magnetic alloy and lined with an insulating material to ensure accurate measurements. These meters are designed for conductive liquids or slurries, and the fluid must not contain ferromagnetic particles or excessive bubbles. The selection of the flowmeter should be based on the temperature, pressure, corrosiveness, and wear characteristics of the fluid being measured.

These devices are widely used across various industries, including petroleum, chemical, metallurgy, textile, food, pharmaceutical, paper, and more. They are also applied in environmental protection, municipal management, and water conservancy projects. For large-diameter electromagnetic flowmeters, the diameter, flow range, lining material, electrode type, and output current must be carefully chosen based on the physical and chemical properties of the fluid.

One key requirement is that the fluid being measured must have a conductivity greater than 5 μS/cm. Non-conductive substances such as gases, steam, oil, or acetone cannot be measured using this type of meter. Additionally, the flow velocity within the meter should ideally fall between 0.3 m/s and 15 m/s. If the flow rate is below 0.3 m/s, local acceleration methods or pipe contraction techniques may be used to improve measurement accuracy.

When it comes to installation, there are two main configurations: integrated and split types. An integrated system is suitable when the environment is stable and the site conditions are favorable. In this case, the sensor and converter are combined into one unit. On the other hand, a split-type configuration is recommended in certain challenging environments, such as:

  • When the ambient temperature or the surface of the flowmeter exceeds 60°C.
  • Where there is significant vibration in the piping.
  • If the sensor’s aluminum casing shows severe corrosion.
  • In areas with high temperatures or corrosive gases present.
  • When the flowmeter is installed in hard-to-reach locations, such as at high altitudes or underground.
