A few days ago, Shahar Waiser, the founder of Gett, a ride-hailing and car rental company, shared his vision that driverless cars will become widespread globally within the next 5 to 7 years. According to him, this shift will require the development of comprehensive laws and regulations to support their integration into everyday life.

Waiser highlighted three main challenges that need to be addressed before autonomous vehicles can fully take off. First, while the technology is already available, it will take time—approximately 5 to 7 years—for legal frameworks to catch up. Second, there’s the critical issue of liability in case of accidents: who is responsible—the owner, the manufacturer, or the software itself? Third, public acceptance remains a hurdle. People still fear riding in or crossing paths with self-driving cars, even though they may eventually want to use them.
Speaking at the "Open Innovation" forum in Moscow, Waiser said, “We all want to ride in these cars, but we’re not yet comfortable walking in front of them.†He emphasized the importance of building trust in the technology.
He also pointed out that the demand for transportation services, especially taxis, is on the rise. “Taxis don’t require parking, which is a major problem in big cities,†he explained. “Parking costs are often higher than taxi fares, so more people might choose to rely on ridesharing instead of owning a car.†This shift could significantly change urban mobility patterns in the coming years.
