On November 24, according to CNBC, the drone industry is experiencing rapid growth. But when it comes to piloting these machines, who's better: humans or artificial intelligence? NASA recently conducted a test on October 12 and released the results today. The findings revealed that expert human pilots are faster, but AI-controlled drones offer greater stability.
The NASA team pitted a top drone pilot, Ken Loo, against an AI-operated drone in a challenging course. Loo completed the track in an average of 11.1 seconds, while the AI drone took 13.9 seconds on average. However, this wasn't just a simple race. Loo described the track as the most complex he had ever flown through. "This was definitely the densest track I've ever encountered," he said. "As a pilot, one of my weaknesses is fatigue. When I got mentally tired, I started to lose my way, even though I had flown this track 10 times already."
NASA emphasized that AI-controlled drones showed superior consistency. Rob Reid, the project’s task manager, explained, “Our algorithm is designed to mimic human behavior, but we can clearly see how inconsistent human performance is. The AI allows for smooth and steady flight, while human pilots tend to push harder, leading to more erratic paths.â€
The drones used in the competition were developed by researchers at the NASA-sponsored Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Google has supported NASA’s two-year research into unmanned aerial vehicles, and this challenge served as a key evaluation. While the competition is exciting, the goal goes beyond racing. These drones could be used for warehouse inventory checks, disaster response, and even space station navigation.
The NASA team built three custom drones named Batman, Clown, and Nightwing, each programmed with advanced algorithms. These drones are capable of navigating complex environments without collisions. Reid added, “In just a day, you might see them competing professionally!â€
