ROHM, a globally recognized semiconductor manufacturer, has expanded its PrestoMOS product line with the introduction of the R60xxMNx series. This new addition is particularly well-suited for motor drives in white goods and industrial equipment that demand low power consumption. As the industry's fastest trr (reverse recovery time) power MOSFET, PrestoMOS is known for its minimal switching losses, making it an ideal choice for energy-efficient inverter applications.
The R60xxMNx series has achieved significant improvements in Ron (on-resistance) and Qg (gate charge) by optimizing ROHM’s proprietary chip structure, while maintaining the high-speed trr performance that defines PrestoMOS. In motor-driven applications like inverter air conditioners, this translates to a 56% reduction in power loss at light loads compared to conventional IGBTs, delivering substantial energy savings.
Beyond energy efficiency, the R60xxMNx series also benefits from ROHM’s long-standing analog simulation technology, which enhances its short-circuit withstand capability. This feature reduces the risk of damage due to abnormal heat caused by circuit malfunctions, significantly improving system reliability.
Mass production of the R60xxMNx series began in December 2016, with a monthly output of 100,000 units. The initial manufacturing was handled by ROHMApolloCo., Ltd. in Fukuoka, Japan, while later production was transferred to ROHMSemiconductor (Korea) Co., Ltd. in South Korea.
In the future, ROHM will continue to focus on developing high-performance, high-reliability products that leverage its advanced simulation design technologies. The company remains committed to contributing to global energy conservation efforts.
With the increasing emphasis on energy efficiency, especially with the revision of Japan’s Energy Conservation Law, home appliances are now adopting the APF (Annual Performance Factor) rating. This metric better reflects real-world usage conditions, shifting the focus from energy savings under rated load to more efficient operation during light loads. Given that nearly 50% of global electricity is used to power electric motors, the need for energy-efficient solutions is more critical than ever.
Key Features of the R60xxMNx Series:
1. Industry-leading trr performance, low Ron, and low Qg for improved energy efficiency
MOSFETs are known for their fast switching and low conduction losses in low-current scenarios, which helps reduce power consumption during normal operation. The R60xxMNx series leverages ROHM’s proprietary Lifetime Control Technology to maintain the fastest trr performance, along with lower Ron and Qg values, making it an excellent choice for energy-saving inverter circuits.
2. Superior short-circuit withstand capability for enhanced reliability
Short-circuit events can lead to excessive current, abnormal heating, and potential component failure. The R60xxMNx series uses ROHM’s analog technology to optimize the parasitic bipolar transistor, preventing thermal runaway and ensuring robust short-circuit protection—critical for reliable motor drive applications.
3. Minimal self-conducting loss through optimized parasitic capacitance
Self-conducting occurs when the voltage between the drain and source of a MOSFET increases rapidly after the high-side switch turns on, causing the gate voltage to rise and leading to internal power loss. The R60xxMNx series minimizes this loss through careful optimization of parasitic capacitance, improving overall efficiency.
Applications include:
Air conditioners, refrigerators, and industrial equipment such as charging stations.

Notes:
*1 trr: Reverse Recovery Time – The time it takes for a switching diode to transition from on to fully off.
*2 Ron: On-Resistance (Ω) – The resistance value when the switching diode is turned on.
*3 Qg: Gate Input Charge Amount – The amount of charge required to switch the MOSFET on or off.
*4 APF (Annual Performance Factor) – A measure of energy efficiency for household air conditioners over the course of a year. The higher the value, the better the energy saving performance.
Presto: An Italian musical term meaning “very fast.â€
ROHM’s unique power MOSFET, featuring the industry’s fastest trr performance and the smallest switching losses, is designed for optimal energy efficiency in modern motor-driven systems.
