International Rectifier (IR), a global leader in power semiconductor solutions, has launched the SupIRBuck family of integrated point-of-load (POL) regulators in a compact 4x5 mm package. These new devices are perfectly suited for energy-efficient servers, storage systems, telecom infrastructure, networking equipment, and set-top boxes. They maintain the same high efficiency and performance as previous generations while reducing the footprint by 33%, making them ideal for space-constrained applications.
The IR3853, IR3856, and IR3859 SupIRBuck regulators combine high-performance controllers with IR's latest MOSFETs in a ultra-thin PQFN package, delivering 4 A, 6 A, and 9 A output currents respectively, with peak efficiencies exceeding 96%. Additional features include overvoltage protection, external synchronization to minimize noise and EMI in multi-rail systems, and precise output voltage detection options for adjustable PGOOD and OV thresholds.
These regulators eliminate the need for traditional two-stage POL conversion, allowing direct operation from a 12 V input. While optimized for 12 V, they also deliver excellent efficiency in 5 V monorail applications. With a programmable switching frequency up to 1.5 MHz and a small 4x5 mm footprint, the new regulator not only reduces size and cost but also increases power density. Their flexible design supports clip layouts, accelerating time-to-market for engineers.

This makes them ideal for space-limited POL applications. Additionally, the new SupIRBuck series provides more compact and cost-effective solutions under 9 A."
The SupIRBuck family includes features such as programmable interrupt current limiting, soft-start control, enhanced pre-bias startup, temperature protection, enable pins with voltage sensing, power-good outputs for undervoltage and overvoltage detection, a 0.7 V reference voltage with ±1% accuracy, and an operating junction temperature range from -40°C to 125°C.
