In today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape, linear regulators have become essential components in a wide range of applications. One of the most innovative examples is the LT3080, which showcases new possibilities for linear regulator usage. This chip offers high performance without any compromise, making it ideal for modern multi-track systems.
The LT3080 features a wide input voltage range from 1.2V to 40V and a very low dropout voltage of just 300mV at full load. It also provides tight voltage and load regulation, excellent ripple rejection, and low noise. Additionally, it includes a stable 10µA current source reference and can operate with various types of capacitors such as ceramic, aluminum, or tantalum. The device also has built-in current and thermal limiting, which enhances reliability and safety.
Available in multiple thermally enhanced surface mount packages, including a compact 8-lead DFN (3mm x 3mm) and an easy-to-use 3-lead SOT-223, the LT3080 can dissipate up to 2W of heat without requiring a heat sink. For higher power applications, it also comes in a TO-220 package that can be mounted on a heat sink.
What makes the LT3080 unique is its use of a reference current instead of a traditional voltage reference to set the output. As shown in Figure 1, the output voltage is determined by a single resistor connected to a voltage follower within the regulator. This design allows heat to be dissipated directly on the board, eliminating the need for an external heat sink. Furthermore, the output transistor's collector is taken separately, enabling the addition of a series resistor to further improve heat dissipation.
Figure 2 illustrates how the LT3080 can be used in parallel configurations. By connecting multiple regulators together, the total output current can be increased. A small ballast resistor is added in series with the output to ensure even current sharing between the regulators. This method is effective and simple, allowing for scalable power solutions.
In addition to being used in parallel, the LT3080 can also be combined with fixed-output regulators to boost the overall current capacity. This is especially useful when a single regulator cannot provide enough current or when system requirements change over time.
Voltage regulators typically consist of a regulating circuit, a control circuit, and a servo motor. When the input voltage or load changes, the control circuit samples and compares the output, then drives the servo motor to adjust the position of the carbon brush. This changes the coil turns ratio, maintaining a stable output voltage. Larger regulators often use voltage compensation techniques to enhance stability and performance.
Figure 3 demonstrates how to increase the output current of a fixed regulator by adding another one in parallel. This approach is simple and effective, offering flexibility in power supply design.
Overall, the LT3080 represents a significant advancement in linear regulator technology, offering improved efficiency, flexibility, and performance for a wide range of applications.
