When designing an LED display system or estimating the budget, it's essential to understand how to calculate the dot pitch, module size, and viewing distance. In this article, we’ll walk you through the basics of these calculations and help you better understand their importance in LED screen design.

Dot Pitch Calculation Method

The dot pitch refers to the distance between the centers of two adjacent pixels. Each pixel can consist of one LED (e.g., PH10 - 1R), two LEDs (e.g., PH16 - 2R), or four LEDs (e.g., PH16 - 2R1G1B). Common dot pitches include P16 (16mm), P20 (20mm), and P12 (12mm).

Relationship Between Dot Pitch and Module (Box) Size

1. Box Length:

Box length = number of pixels on the long side × dot pitch

For example: For a PH16 module, the length is 16 points × 1.6 cm = 25.6 cm, and the height is 8 points × 1.6 cm = 12.8 cm.

2. Box Width:

Box width = number of pixels on the wide side × dot pitch

For example: A PH10 module has a length of 32 points × 1.0 cm = 32 cm and a height of 16 points × 1.0 cm = 16 cm.

Full Screen Resolution Calculation

1. Cabinet Resolution:

Cabinet resolution = (length × width) / dot pitch

2. Full Screen Resolution:

LED display screen per square meter = 1,000,000 / dot pitch

Module Number Calculation

Method 1:

Total area ÷ module length ÷ module height = number of modules used

For example: For a 10-square-meter PH16 outdoor monochrome LED display, the number of modules required is: 10 ÷ 0.256 ÷ 0.128 ≈ 305.

Method 2 (More Accurate):

Number of modules along the length × number of modules along the height = total number of modules used

For example: If the screen is 5 meters long and 2 meters high, the number of modules needed would be: 5 ÷ 0.256 ≈ 19.5 → 20 modules; 2 ÷ 0.128 ≈ 15.2 → 16 modules. Total = 20 × 16 = 320 modules.

LED Display Viewing Distance Calculation

RGB Color Mixing Distance:

LED full-color screen viewing distance = dot pitch (mm) × 500 to dot pitch (mm) × 1000

Minimum Viewing Distance for Smooth Image:

LED display visible distance = dot pitch (mm) × 1000

Optimal Viewing Distance for HD Quality:

Best viewing distance = dot pitch (mm) × 3000 to dot pitch (mm) × 1000

Maximum Viewing Distance:

Farthest viewing distance = screen height (m) × 30
